Australian Macadamia Society(AMS) CEO Jolyon Burnett: Yunnan Macadamia Industry Society makes Mountain planting and Bees pollination extremely eye-opening for the whole international industry.

“S is the English initial of car-plates in Lincang City, which is easy to remember given the “S” shape mountain road.”

April 24th, Chen Yuxiu, Chairman of Yunnan Nuts Industry Society, Jolyon Burnett, CEO of Australian Macadamia Society(AMS) and Guo Xianghong, Senior Commercial Representative of Australian Trade and Investment Commission were racing along the rugged and “S” shape mountain road. They were on their way to check the preparation process and arrangement for the 8th International Macadamia Symposium which will be host in October. The Symposium drew considerable interests of over 500 macadamia professors, scholars and famous enterprises at home and abroad.

Up to present, the planting areas of macadamia in Lincang has already reached 2,270,000 mu, becoming the largest macadamia planting area in the world, with an output of 12 thousand tons dry fruit in 2017. Within the next few years, in the wake of large-scale maturity of macadamia, the development of macadamia industry in Yunnan is predicted to have profound impact on the international market.

Regarding to the 10,000 mu planting base in Dazongjing, Yongde county, it yielded 600 tons in 2017, creating over 30 million yuan output value. Jolyon Burnett showed his admiration when seeing the tresses are growing on the hillside, nearly 50 vertical degrees, scattering in the mountains and plains.

“I should show great respect to Yunnan fruit farmers for their unbelievable output without mechanized agriculture technology, completely different geographical condition far from Australia and South Africa.” Jolyon Burnett said. Other international peers must be extremely interested in the Mountain Planting when they come around.

There are 1100mu macadamia planting base in Dahong Mountain, Yongde county, benefiting more than 600 famers from planting and sale sections. “The nuts in-husk sold for 14yuan per kilo last year, but the nuts in-shell sold for 50 to 60 yuan per kilo. The fruit farmers have attached great importance to the cultivation of macadamia when they found the significant profits. The yield of each mu is expected to reach 250 kilogram in five years’ time.”Although the roar of the wind blew the trees to a halt, people have to make sounds increased by eight degrees sometimes, for fear of blowing away when open the mouth. When looking at the neat rows of trees spreading all over the mountain, everyone could feel the hope of vitality.

Chen Yuxiu introduced the situation of the planting area to the investigation team at the No.1 nut farm in Tianba village, Nansan town, Zhenkang county. After scrutinized carefully the flower pollination, Jolyon Burnett turned his attention to the area under the forest where beekeepers were gathering honey. Jolyon Burnett said,” For the specialized person taking in charge of bees’ work is always available, situation here is much better than that in Australia. The number of bees is in direct relation to the pollination of fruit trees, but where there is not so much labor force in Australia, which can be only relied on wild insects for pollination.

On a 2 days’ trip, the delegation had visited National Nuts Testing Laboratory, Shifo Mountain Plantation Base in Xingfu town, Yun county, Dazongjing Plantation Base in Daxueshan village, Yongde county, Yunaoda Seed-breeding Base in Daxueshan village, Yongde county, Dahongshan Plantation Base in Chonggang village, Yongde county, Yunnan No.1 Macadamia Manor in Tianba village, Nansan town, Zhenkang county, and Yunaoda Processing Plants in Zhenkang county, at nearly 30 degrees of high temperature long "hunting" within more than 600 kilometers. By investigating each step of seeding, planting, management, fattening, collecting, processing, investigators repeatedly elaborated the itinerary and details of the October International Macadamia Symposium, hoping to reveal the best side of the Yunnan macadamia to the peers in the whole international industry.

On the way back on April 25th, I asked another companion:” Tired?”

He laughed and said,” when you saw those who in their fifties still taking the trouble working so hard, how likely would you feel tired?”
